ONE CITY HITS MAJOR MILESTONE

We have just completed our third year of operation and God has enabled OCM to accomplish a monumental goal of efficiency and fiscal responsibility. One City has reached a point where 100% of our administrative overhead is funded and paid for out of its own economic development practices. Practices that not only help fund our ministry but help our widows, our orphans and One City artisans enjoy an independent livelihood. The end result is quite gratifying. In addition to absorbing our overhead we are able to invest $1.15 towards sustainable programs and Light Village construction for every dollar donated. Now THAT’S a big Hallelujah!

Please consider partnering with us that we may expand our self relent philosophy to those willing to accept a hand up rather then a hand out.

OCM CURRENT EVENTS

FEBRUARY 1, 2012 It has now been two weeks since we arrived back in the country (Uganda) and one week since hitting the ground in Mbale, home of OCM’s now well established Light Village. The flight back was uneventful, everything ran on schedule and all nine pieces of our checked baggage made it as safely and as timely as we did. That also was a big Hallelujah! The week spent in Kampala availed us opportunities to enjoy a brief respite, catch up with friends, meet with key National Government Officials based in Kampala and do some shopping for the much needed restocking of provisions.

Our arrival back in Mbale has been followed with a succession of meetings giving us updates from local government officials and OCM staff. Once again, as with last year, our senior level staff performed impeccably. Pastor Tukole, our Manafwa District Director and Light Village Assistant Manager along with our construction team consisting of our foreman, Philip and our site engineers, Michael, Mankind and Godfrey all performed their duties commendably well. Again, yet another Hallelujah, but no real surprises here as these guys have earned a great deal respect and confidence from Deb and me.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

The construction at the Light Village has been moving along with over 37,000 bricks now in inventory and ready for building placement. We just concluded a meeting with our architect who is finalizing the drawings for the Africa TrAID building, Light Village Police Post, Power House, Guest Houses and our Administration Building. Our Light Village Bethel Community Church, along with The Light Fuel processing center and the Aqua/Hydroponics center are now on his drawing board. His next few projects include the Children’s Homes, Light Village’s City on a Hill School, our medical clinic and women’s center.

WATER

Safe drinking water is a basic human need and yet today over one billion people worldwide lack access to it. The resulting tragedy is 206 human lives are lost every minute, over 1.8 million annually, due to unsafe drinking water. Climatic changes and environmental conditions in Uganda and throughout the rest of Africa threaten to worsen this already alarming fact. One City is answering this urgent call to action by moving forward with several sustainable solutions to be implemented and modeled. Project specific solutions include rain water harvesting, water storage and containment, ground water protection, and water purification practices.

Your donations help One City achieve its sustainable solution goals.

Lutz couple returns to Tampa to raise money for

Sustainable Empowerment in Africa

By Tia Mitchell, Times Staff Writer For Deb and Mike Gilbert, how they traded comfortable lives in Lutz for mission work halfway around the world is one long "God story."

They say God gave them the strength four years ago to turn grief into action after the death of their teenage son. They credit God with giving them a vision to launch a ministry in an economically depressed and war-ravaged nation.

God, they say, put people in their lives who helped them reach their goals. He placed signs along the way confirming they were on the right path. The Gilberts have no doubt Uganda is where they were called to be, and now it is their home.

Though their ministry is only three years old, the Gilberts believe it was God's plan for their lives all along. Everything else - their jobs, their church experience, even their son's addiction-related death - was preparing them to fulfill that purpose.

Though the move to Uganda was their first mission trip and very uncharacteristic for the couple who were comfortable in their suburban, middle-class lives, they don't describe it as an odd turn of events. Instead, they say, it was just trusting God enough to move when he said "go."

"I know it's not a surprise to God that we're in Africa," said Deb, who is in Tampa to raise money for the mission. "That's what he was raising us up to." . . .
